A Fresh and Fun Start

by

I was in Bangalore last saturday attending the Graduation ceremony of the 12th Graders at TISB. It was heartening to see the young ones grinning from ear to ear, cheering the ones going on to the dais to collect their certificates. The auditorium resonated with wolf  whistles, cat calls, thunderous applause as the names of the Universities the students were heading to for undergraduation was read out. The streams that were chosen were  interesting – biomedical studies, advanced mathematical sciences, optometry, art, design, construction, aeropsace studies, theatre, photography, geography, international relations, etc. One thing was obvious! The child appeared to be free to decide what they wanted and their parents looked absolutely happy with their choice.

I was wondering why our Indian counterparts offered limiting choices. How many of us encourage our students to pursue what they want never mind the prospects of a job relating to that discipline! What kind of attempt or interest is shown to find out what actually interests the child, what appeals to them, what keeps their heart and mind engrossed and happy. Viren and I have been thinking to ourselves that the least we can do at Eduflame (relating to children) is help them have fun while guiding them in areas we think are important. Afterall, they are our future and I would like to imagine that they will build a better country and finally make us a developed nation.

So children, here we come. We will be there at some of the schools in Hyderabad on Saturdays post school and sundays and we will have a rollicking time. We will get our friends along, divide all of us into fun groups and talk about anything under the sun. We will plan a day to plant trees on neglected avenues, teach people some civic sense (atleast get them to stop spitting on the road, follow lane discipline, stop littering, etc). We will talk about your interests, talents, and see if we can put together a small peice of plan to get you think better and decide. So, come June and hopefully the rain, we will be there!
